Geelong benefactor dies
LONG-TIME Geelong benefactor Alex Popescu has died at the age of 93.
The timber merchant, who has a function room named after him at Skilled Stadium, had tipped millions into the football club over the years.
Popescu, who owned businesses around Geelong worth more than $50 million, played a key behind-the-scenes role with the Cats during the hard times, often opening his own cheque book to pay staff salaries.
He moved to Australia from Romania in 1948, one of thousands of young workers escaping the ruins of Europe. A year later he was living in a caravan in Geelong, working for International Harvester.
