From more than 1,000 applications our judges have shortlisted 30 semi-finalists with brilliant ideas addressing the reception and integration of refugees and migrants in Europe.
The European Social Innovation Competition seeks creative approaches that harness the potential of refugees and migrants, enabling them to contribute to the social, economic, cultural and political life of their host countries. The ideas this year cover fields such as education, employment, community cohesion and cultural diversity.
The applications we received came from 36 countries and the shortlisted semi-finalists are from Austria to Ukraine, with Germany in the lead with five successful semi-finalists!

It was a difficult job for our judges to pick only 30 ideas as we’ve seen such inspiring stories and creative ideas from all applicants. Positive responses from people across Europe, finding solutions to integrated futures, many with a focus on new technology.
Ernest Radal, Mobilearn, one of this year’s judges said:
“Digital tools for refugees can change lives. In this year’s Competition we’ve seen some great ideas in the intersection between tech and refugees. With the help of ICT, some of the semi-finalists have shown us that we can tackle the everyday challenges of refugees, and increase possibilities of integration and empowerment.”
The next stage of the competition is for the semi-finalists to receive tailored mentoring and support to give them the best possible chance in the Competition and beyond. This year’s social innovation academy is to be held 4-6 July in Berlin, where the semi-finalists will take part in workshops and visit examples of collaborative approaches to helping with integration that are already happening in Germany.
Finally, we’d like to say congratulations to all semi-finalists and a big thank you to all 1,095 applicants, showing great examples of integrated futures!
