Intimate Choreographies – Rencontre Internationale: A Romanian Performative Intervention Premiering in France

0

Romania is represented in France at the Magdalena Festival in Montpellier from September 18th to 30th through a performative intervention. This initiative aims to present Romanian choreographic and performative activities on an international scale.

Intimate Choreographies – Rencontre Internationale is a performative exploration  proposed by the 4Culture Association for the third edition of the Magdalena Festival. The concept, developed under the artistic direction of choreographer and curator Andreea Căpitănescu, revolves around the idea that surveillance spaces can surprisingly foster a deep emotional intimacy  that transcends the unequal authoritarian structure of technology.

The artists of the performance, Judith State, Flavia Giurgiu, and Elena Vlădăreanu, will guide participants through shared choreographic actions while also incorporating moments of individual reflection experienced simultaneously. Through poetic fragments written and recited by the artists, this performative intervention aims to connect with ourselves and others regardless of how the urban environment may divert or prevent us from creating deep and real connections. The intervention involves an individual audio system (headphones and receiver) accessible to each participant.

Intimate Choreographies – Rencontre Internationale will close out the festival week on September 30th, starting from 7:00 PM, as part of the „Host to Host” program conceived by artists Marie Clauzade and Marion Coutarel. The performance will take place at MAS DES BROUSSES, an 18th-century building that has been uninhabited for 10 years and will come to life with the help of twenty artists. The Magdalena Festival program can be consulted here.

This project is presented at Magdalena Festival through the Cantemir 2023 program developed by the Romanian Cultural Institute, with the support of the partner ICI-CCN Montpellier and the European cooperation network Life Long Burning.

For the festival audience, the texts are translated into French by Diana Nechit and into English by Florin Buzdugan.

The 4 Culture Association was founded in 2010 and engages in activities within the field of contemporary arts, including dance, performance, visual arts, and multidisciplinary projects. Through its projects and programs, 4Culture aims to contribute to the development of the contemporary art audience in Romania, continuous professional development, and the promotion of young artists through grants, workshops, research and coaching programs, residencies, production, presentation, and dissemination.

This project is co-financed by the Romanian Cultural Institute through the Cantemir Program, a funding program for cultural projects aimed at the international environment.
