Festivalul si Concursul International „George Enescu” a fost infiintat in 1958 ca semn al recunoasterii geniului enescian, pentru a omagia viata si creatia marelui compozitor roman. Primele editii ale acestui Festival si Concurs au reunit nume sonore ale vietii muzicale internationale printre care amintim pe Lordul Yehudi Menuhin, David Oistrach, Sviatoslav Richter, Herbert von Karajan si multi altii care prin participarea lor au contribuit la cresterea renumelui acestui eveniment al Europei de Est.
